When we began our business in 1983 the world was a different place. Ronald Reagan was president, personal computers were just in their infancy and the release of Return of the Jedi was the big news. Personal relationships and service were the foundation of success. A handshake and genuine loyalty to a customer was what it was all about.
Over the last few decades as technology has advanced and as the healthcare industry has expanded we have witnessed a shift in the way business is done. Manufacturers have found ways to entrench themselves into the system by building propriety software into the machines they design, attempting to reduce competition and limiting your choices for service.
Very often equipment is designed with an end-of-life timeline and support is no longer offered after a predefined date. Then when a machine develops an issue the manufacture simply says “Sorry that's no longer supported, but we would be happy to help you to purchase newer equipment.” Your original machine is likely fixable and would continue to work perfectly fine for many years – as long as it is maintained quality with service.
Unfortunately service technicians have been encouraged to promote frequent replacements and upgrades to equipment. With each new version machinery has become more and more software based and therefore more proprietary. As a result the customer can increasingly be held at the mercy of the manufacturer.
